COMMENTARY: Don’t count on shamrocks for your success
Relying on luck? Then move to Vegas.
March is the month of Saint Patrick’s Day and the luck of the Irish — so let’s talk about luck.
Never underestimate the power and gift of luck, but remember: It’s a bonus, not a plan. In fact, most people you might consider to be lucky, in most cases, created their own luck when their hard work was met with good timing.
What does it take to be lucky in the car business?
— It takes having a solid business plan that you execute every day.
— It means doing the extra steps others aren’t willing to do.
— It’s being willing to stand up for your core beliefs.
— It’s the result of doing what it takes to do it right, even though in most cases it’s harder and takes longer to do.
— It’s never doing the wrong thing just because it’s easier – even (sometimes) more profitable. A short-term quick fix will never outperform a long-term gameplan solution.
At the dealership, good timing happens every day:
— It might be the buyer who showed up – against all odds – to your showroom.
— It’s the loyal customer who uses your service department every time they need maintenance.
— It’s the employee who shows up early every day ready to work hard for you.
— It’s the customer who trades in a vehicle you need for your used car lot.
— It’s solid communication between your Service and Sales departments.
These lists go on and on — lucky for you, I don’t have more time.
Let’s sum it up: You create your own luck. It comes when your hard work and preparation combine with good timing – and good timing shows up every day.
